I’ve painted our Front Door 7 Times

I say this over and over, but painting your front door is so easy to do and it can change the whole look of your home in just one afternoon. I get such a kick out of painting our front door that I have now done it 7 times over the years. Because I am always getting asked about the different paint colors this door has been painted in, I thought I’d write up an updated blog post and hopefully answer any questions you may have.

I will also share a link under each of the pictures that will take you to the original blog post where you can find even more details and a lot more pictures of each color. These are in order from newest to oldest so let’s start with the current look of our front door.

1. Gel Stain Wood Door

This is a technique that I have been using A LOT Lately. I start with a coat of brown paint and then I add either a stain or a gel stain over it. The outcome is a beautiful wood-color finished. For this door I first painted it in a color called, Garden Soil by EasyCare Paint found at True Value, and then I painted on the Gel Stain and here I used Minwax Aged Oak.

2. White Door

I love white and it surprised me that it took me so long to get around to painting our front door white. I feel like you can never go wrong with painting anything white. For my white paint, I just used Straight out of the can white paint. Meaning I don’t pick a color or have the paint tinted. This is something that I have done for years and have always been happy with the white I get. I have tried most of all of the different paint brands and they are pretty much all the same. I double check with the person at the paint counter that it’s the correct Base and then I have them shake the can for me. I typically go with a Satin or Semi Gloss Finish. And because our door is covered with a roof I just use interior Paint. That way I can reuse any leftover paint on other project if I want. I’ve never had any problems with the outdoor elements, but you can definitely use Outdoor Paint if you think it would be better.

3. Red Door

Red doors bring Luck, so they say. I’m not sure that is true, I never won the lottery when we had a red door, but that doesn’t mean we weren’t lucky in other ways. This red is named Caliente by Benjamin Moore. I had also used this same color of red on our kitchen cabinets. (seen Here).

The Utah Utes on the door was created with a stencil. More on that can be seen HERE.

And then in the past, whenever I’ve painted our front door, I actually painted both sides of it, which made for a really cute entryway. However, this last time I decided to only paint the exterior side brown so the interior is still currently white.

4. Robin Egg Blue Door

This color is probably my most asked about door color. This beautiful blue is named Wythe Blue by Benjamin Moore and I can see why it’s so liked. This color is so cute and cheerful and looked great with the exterior color of our home. It gave our home just a pop of color without being too overwhelming or bright.

When our front door was painted in this blue, I also received a lot of questions about the exterior color of our home. I don’t know for sure what the color of our house is painted in, but I did write up THIS BLOG POST with some similar color options.

5. Grey Door

I tend to get fixated on colors around our home. For instance when our front door was red so was our kitchen cabinets and living room sofa. And here when our front door was grey, so was our fireplace mantle, bathroom, couch and other areas around our home. And right now, like I said I’m on a dark gel-stain wood look and you can find it through out our home. Anyway, so here when I was in my Grey faze I used this pretty color called SMOKEY EYES by Kitz paint.

It made for a pretty interior door color as well.

6. Navy Blue Door

I love a navy blue, and this one was great, It’s more of a dark navy. This color is called OBSIDIAN BY OLYMPIC Paint. Lowes use to cary the Olympic brand and so I used it a lot in the past, however I’m not quite sure that they still cary it or who else does. Either way, If you like this color, It should be an easy one to match up with any paint brand. For instance the color, Van Deusen Blue is pretty similar, I used that color in our Dining room once and it was very similar to this color.

1. Teal Door

Okay that brings us way back to the first time I painted our front door. This color started my whole obsession with painting our door because it made a huge difference to the look of our house. This gorgeous Teal color is called Night Scape by Valspar. (5002-8C1) and it may also be my favorite of all of the colors. Always look so beachy to me.

What color was your favorite?

I’m sure I’ll be adding more door colors to this list one day. I feel like I would love to see what a Green, Mint, and even a Coral door would also look like on our home. So many colors, so little time 🙂
