Last week on a Saturday morning, I got looking at our walls and I said to Jake, I think I should paint the walls a darker color to make the white trim stand out better. The trim molding and wainscoting in our home is spectacular! It’s one of the things that I love most about our home. I have painted these walls at least four times now and each time I went with a lighter color, which only blended in, taking attention away from the beautiful trim.
Jake thought painting the walls a darker color was a Great Idea. So then I gave him the choice, Blue or Brown? I even showed him a couple of inspiration pictures I’ve had saved on Pinterest. His next response shocked me! He asked, “Why not paint the dining room Blue and the Living room Brown?” What!? I literally had never thought to paint each room a different color before. These rooms are right across from each other and practically one big open space and so I always just painted them the same color, but I Loved his idea! Jake really has the best ideas.
Later that day I walked down to True Value, our local hardware store and I bought a can of paint. By the next day I had the whole room finished. The color I choose is named, Van Deusen Blue by Benjamin Moore. (HC-166).
I absolutely LOVE how this room turned out. And most of all, I achieved just what I wanted; The white trim moldings and wainscoting stand out beautifully now.
The two corner hutches (original to our 1924 home) also make a bigger statement in the room now. I love these hutches. I like to display my collection of dishes in these cabinets.
After the walls were painted, I didn’t like how the light blue chandelier looked next to the darker blue walls and so I painted it in this rust/copper color. I plan to write up a blog post explaining more about it soon. I think that the copper color compliments the blue walls nicely.
I also like how my crane curtains look next to the wall color. I was a little worried that they wouldn’t look good, but I think that they do. Learn more about these curtains in THIS POST.
Here is the second corner hutch in the room. I don’t have as many dishes in this hutch as I do the other. I should probably play around with them a little more and make then more equal. Perhaps another day I will.
Although the doors on these cabinets are usually closed and so what’s inside them isn’t always noticeable. That is why I like to open them up whenever I take pictures of this room, to show off my collection of dishes.
The last thing I need to do in this room is finish the table and re-paint the chairs. I sanded our table top down but haven’t sealed it yet. I just can’t find anything that won’t turn it orange. I’m contemplating putting a butcher block oil on it. Has anyone tried this yet? The chairs are currently painted green, (tutorial HERE), but now I’m thinking of painting them either White or Dark Brown. What color would you suggest?
I am still loving my dark Gel-Stained wood floors. As you should know, these floors were an orange color before, and I hand sanded them and then added a Gel stain to them. Learn More about my Gel Stained floors HERE. I love this next picture and how the sun light is shining on them. The dark floors are now way harder to keep clean. I need to sweep and mop them every day. I don’t of course, but I should. 😉
Here is a picture taken from the living room. I Love how our red couch looks next to the blue. It feels so nautical to me. I’ll be back soon to share more of our living room and it’s new Brown walls.
But one last picture before I go……as I shared in my last post, I can not get enough of our trees outside. They are almost unreal.
