Our New Roof and Why We Chose Metal

When our Home Owner’s Insurance Company told us we needed to get a new roof before they could continue covering us, we were pretty upset. A new roof wasn’t exactly what we wanted to spend a ton of money on, nor did we have any issues with our previous roof, but we knew that this was something that had to be done if we liked it or not. Now that we have a beautiful new metal roof on our home, we’re pretty happy with the way it all turned out.

From a straight forward look at our home, the roof isn’t even that noticeable. You only really notice the roof from the side angles of it, and the same goes with the backside of the house as well.

In this next picture you’ll see how our roof looked before. Our home had a light green-grey colored asphalt shingle on it, and truthfully we quite liked the look of it. I’m not sure if these particular shingles are even still available, but we decided that this was an opportunity to try something new. *Also, note that brick chimney because it’s no longer there, I’ll explain more in a minute.

We got a referral for a roofer in town and had him give us a quote. After talking with him he told us that a metal roof would only add a couple of hundred dollars more than asphalt shingles to the total price of replacing the roof. We were shocked to hear this, we had heard that metal roofs were far more pricer. So right away we knew we wanted to go with a metal roof. Next it was time to decide on a color. Here were the colors available to us. After much debate, we chose the color Medium Brown.

The roofers began on our roof right away and had the job done in a week and a half. It was really exciting to see all of the progress being made on a daily basis. The only problem we had is that the skylights on our roof look down into our bedroom and bathroom. So we had to time our bathroom visits around the roofers so they didn’t see us from up above. 😊 And because of the summer heat, they were up there at the crack of dawn.

The most exciting part was seeing the metal roof go up. I loved it from the moment I saw it.

Reasons why we chose to go with a Metal Roof.

• AESTHETICALLY PLEASING: I have always loved the look of metal roofs. Metal roofs add such a rustic appearance and can really go on any style of home, making them very versatile.
• ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY: The idea that our old roofing materials were going to be taken to the landfill felt so wrong. Metal on the other hand can be recycled, which makes them a much more eco-friendly roofing option.
• Longevity: Metal roofs are extremely durable and can last 40-70 years, which is double the length of time of an asphalt roof. And then our roofer told us, down the long road, it may just be a matter of switching out the screws for new one rather than replacing the whole thing.
• DURABILITY: We have had some heavy snowfall winters here in Idaho, and one year we did have a problem area on the backside of our home. Metal roofs can withstand harsh weather conditions, including heavy rain, snow, high winds, and hail with minimal damage.
• ENERGY EFFICIENCY: Now it’s too soon for us to know for sure, but metal roofs reflect solar radiant heat, which can reduce cooling cost by 10-25%.

Over our front door is a smaller, roof and under the asphalt shingles was cedar shingles. I wasn’t around when they were working on it, but I wish I was, I love wood shingles and I am betting it looked really charming.

Although, I don’t think I could love the cedar shingles more than this brown metal roof above our front door. 🤎

Okay, so back to the chimneys. We had two old brick chimneys on our home, one the leads to our basement and the other to our fireplace in our living room that we only use with an electric fireplace insert, never a wood burning fire. The brick could possibly be 100 years old, the age of our home. Both our home owners insurance company and our roofer said that the brick chimneys needed to go, and that they were unstable and could easily be knocked over. I was sad over this, but then asked our roofer to please keep the bricks so that I could use it in another place around our home.

After the new metal roof was on, I didn’t miss the brick chimneys at all and really like the cleaner look of the metal sheets.

As requested, our roofer did leave the bricks behind for us.

Down the road, I would like to use the brick to create a new walkway to our home. But in the meantime, I cleaned the brick and built two planter boxes on the sides of our porch. I still need to get some flowers for my pots. I’m thinking some pretty fall mums would look nice.

The idea to re-do the two pillars in brick is also an option since this porch needs to be redone as well.

Our metal roof is still new, and in fact the roofer will be back again soon to roof our garage that’s in the back of our home, so I can’t give you a full review on the metal roof just yet, but for now, I can say, it sure looks pretty and we are very pleased with it. We are also patiently waiting for it to rain because we all want to hear how the rain sounds on a the metal roof.
