Collected Coastal Bookshelves

Styling these two bookshelves in our home is one of my favorite things to do. But when I say “styling” it’s probably not the same styling as you typically see. Generally when I see Styled bookshelves or “shelfies” as they are now sometimes called on Pinterest or Instagram they often look pretty put together and most of the time also very sparse with only a few styled objects and a lot of empty space. I however prefer my bookshelves to be full, cluttered, and collected. I think bookshelves are so much more interesting this way. What is your preference? No wrong answer.

When re-styling these bookshelves I like to first empty them out, while creating a huge mess on the kitchen table, and then I wipe them down for a clean start. Then I start by bringing in the bigger items that I want to use and from there I just keep filling the shelves up until I have achieved the look that I am after.

A lot of times I have a particular idea of how I want the shelves to look. For instance, the last time I styled these bookshelves I wanted a home library feel and so I brought in all the books that we own and I focussed mainly on just books.

This time around, I decided that I wanted to incorporate some framed pictures. I love having pictures around our home. We currently have a Stairway Gallery Wall, A Vacation Hallway Gallery Wall, and A family gallery wall that you can see a little bit of in this next picture. Pictures are important to us and so we like to showcase them around our home.

Back in the day I use to print our pictures all the time and now I keep them in a wicker trunk. But nowadays with our phones and internet, pictures just don’t get printed enough anymore. So I went digging around in my trunk and pulled out a few favorite pictures to put in frames, but honestly, I just wanted to frame them all. Here are a couple of pictures of my boys when they were babes, now they are teenagers. These pictures melted my heart and needed to be framed and displayed.

I framed a couple more pictures on the second bookshelf. These two brown frames were picked up from the Dollar store not too long ago. I really like them because they have an engraved wood look to them. The dollar store is an excellent place to buy simple frames. I may just have to go back for a few more.

After adding the picture frames, I brought in all of our books. I like a bit of a messy look here and so I have some books in piles, some backwards and in no particular order. Speaking of books, I recently bought a bunch of decorating books that I love and need to write a review about. So let me know if you are interested in hearing more and I’ll get going a blog post for you.

And then lastly, I tried to focus on adding a collected look. So you’ll see a few collections here; I have a jar full of corks. These corks are fun, a lot of them have special dates written on them. And then you can see some of my long seashell necklaces hanging on a bamboo hook. I collect seashell necklaces and have about 50 more that are hanging in my bathroom, these here are just my longer ones. And then overallI, as you can see, I love coastal style and so you will always find coastal touches everywhere throughout our home.

So what do you think of my bookshelves? Fun and collected or too cluttered for your taste?
