Denim Merry Christmas Banner

As you may know, I love me some Denim 💙 I have made several things around our home using recycled denim, like pillows, placemats, and even a plant pot. (See my denim projects HERE). So I was excited to dig into my pile of Denim scraps to make something cute for our home this Holiday season. And after an hour or so of cutting and gluing I came up with this Recycled Denim Merry Christmas Banner. I absolutely love how it turned out.

This Denim Merry Christmas Banner was really fun to make and it looks super festive hanging by our Christmas Tree this year.

I save all of my families old denim jeans. Once we have outgrown them and if they are too worn out to donate then they go into my stash pile. Therefore, I always seem to have denim scraps on hand for craft projects like this.

Here is what you will need to make a Denim Christmas Banner like mine:

  • Denim Fabric Scraps
  • Alphabet Stencils
  • Cardboard
  • Scissors
  • Sharpie Marker
  • Twine
  • Glue Stick
  • Hot Glue Gun and Hot Glue Sticks

Step 1.

Flip denim over to the back side. Lay Stencil backwards onto denim. Trace stencil using a Sharpie Marker. Note: I mixed up my denim so that I had a variation of light and dark denim. I also like the look of the back side of denim.

Step 2.

Cut out letter by following Marker lines. Continue Step’s 1 and 2 until you have all letters needed to spell out Merry Christmas. You could also have the banner say something else if you want.

As seen from the picture above, the denim letters themselves are not sturdy enough to hang by themselves and so you will need to get some cardboard to make the letters lay flat.

I also keep cardboard on hand for projects like this. This particular cardboard was from a three sided display board- the type meant for science fair projects. You can pick these up at the dollar tree.

Step 3.

Lay your denim letters onto the cardboard. Trace around letter, and cut out. You’ll need to cut the cardboard letter slightly smaller than the denim letter so that it doesn’t show in the end.

Step 4.

Using a Glue Stick, attach the denim letter onto the cardboard letter.

Step 5.

Now Hot Glue the cardboard letters onto a piece of twine. Leave extra twine on both ends for hanging.

Try to evenly space each of your letters. I used my finger to space out my letters, so my letters are about one finger spaced apart.

Let the hot glue on the banner dry and then it’s ready to hang. I hung my banner on a shelf in our living room. This banner would also look cute hanging on a fireplace.

For a fun touch, I added some pom pom ornaments that I already had onto both ends of my banner.

Jingle bells, tassels, or other ornaments hanging on the ends could also look super cute.

Those cute little Gnome nutcrackers on my shelf are from World Market last year. They are no longer available, but here are some other cute ones.

So what do you think of my Denim Merry Christmas banner? Is this something you would like to make too? Would you do anything different to yours?
