Fresh & Easy Tzatziki Sauce (Perfect for Pitas or Dipping)

I recently came across a fit girl on Instagram who shared that she eats the same meal almost every day, a baked sweet potato topped with peanut butter and a side of ground turkey with tzatziki sauce. She said the meal is satisfying, high in protein, and has the perfect balance of sweet and savory. I was intrigued enough to give it a try myself, including making my own tzatziki sauce from scratch. And honestly… it was really good. I can absolutely see why someone would want to eat this meal every single day.

Since the tzatziki sauce ended up being my favorite part of the meal, I thought it would be fun to share the simple recipe I used to make it.

I originally followed a recipe I found online, but it turned out much too tart for my taste. So I started adjusting the ingredients a bit, adding more of some things and less of others, until the flavor felt just right. The result was a creamy, fresh tzatziki sauce that had the perfect balance of tangy and bright without being overpowering. Here is the version that I ended up loving.

(not pictured: Sour Cream)

Ingredience:

  • 1 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 2 cucumbers (or 4 small cucumbers), grated and drained
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon finely minced garlic
  • 4 tablespoons fresh dill, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Grating the Cucumbers

Start by washing your cucumbers and cutting off the ends. I left the skins on for extra color and texture. Using a handheld box cheese grater, grate the cucumbers into a bowl. I like to rotate the sides of the grater so some of the cucumber comes out fine while some pieces are a little more coarse. This gives the tzatziki a nice texture instead of being too smooth.

Once the cucumbers are grated, wrap them in a paper towel and gently squeeze out the excess liquid. Cucumbers hold a lot of water, and removing some of it helps keep the sauce thick and creamy instead of watery.

Directions

In a small mixing bowl, add the Greek yogurt, sour cream, and the grated and drained cucumbers. Squeeze in the fresh lemon juice, then add the minced garlic, chopped fresh dill (saving a little to sprinkle on top later), olive oil, and salt and pepper to taste.

Stir everything together until well combined and creamy. Once mixed, give it a quick taste and adjust the seasoning if needed. A little extra salt, lemon, or dill can help bring all the flavors together.

Serving Tips

If you’re entertaining, transfer the tzatziki sauce to a decorative dish, drizzle a little extra olive oil over the top, and sprinkle with the reserved fresh dill. This makes a beautiful and flavorful dip for a party, perfect to serve alongside pita chips, crackers, or fresh veggies. It’s a simple way to make your homemade sauce feel extra special for guests.

You can also add a couple of cucumber slices on top as well.

Serving for Lunch

For my husband’s lunch, I mixed some fresh ground turkey with the tzatziki sauce and stuffed it into a pita bread that I cut in half to make two pockets. On the side, I served a few crackers with a small bowl of extra sauce for dipping. He said it tasted really good, and I loved how versatile the sauce is, it works perfectly as a sandwich filling or as a dip.

This homemade tzatziki sauce is fresh, flavorful, and surprisingly easy to make. Whether you use it as a dip, a sandwich spread, or a topping for a healthy lunch, it adds a bright and creamy touch to any meal. I love how simple ingredients can come together to create something so delicious, and I can definitely see myself making this again and again.
