Years ago, I added white curtains to the ceiling of our bedroom and let them hang down around the bed. I’ve always wanted to add a little more fabric to create that soft, swooping look at the top, and I finally got around to doing it. But instead of using white sheets again, I decided to try lace.
When I added the white curtains around the bed years ago, I used white bed sheets that I cut in half. I hung them using a staple gun and simply stapled them right into the wood-plank ceiling. You can see the original post about hanging the sheets [HERE].
The lace I used is actually a tablecloth that I cut in half. I had it hanging in the French doors in our living room before, but I eventually decided to take it down. Then the idea of hanging the lace from my bedroom ceiling popped into my head, and I just went for it.
I also had a second lace tablecloth, so I decided to add that one to the window over the white curtains.
The details in the lace are so beautiful, and they are especially pretty when the light shines through. The lace added such a lovely layer of texture to the room.
To attach the lace, I simply used some clear thumbtacks. I was originally just going to try it out, and I thought thumbtacks would be an easy way to experiment with the idea. But once I saw how much I liked it, I decided to leave them in.
Lace curtains and tablecloths can often be found at thrift stores and antique stores, so keep your eye out if you like this idea. You never know what you might find that could be used in a completely different way.
I just think the lace added such a romantic touch to our bedroom. I also noticed that it filters the light in a really beautiful way. There’s a subtle difference in the way the light looks now. Somehow, it feels softer and brighter.

I tossed a white sheet over the ottoman bench at the end of the bed and added a few pillows to continue that soft, cozy white look.
I also added this antique model ship to the top of my armoire. This space just needed something, and I think the ship adds the perfect little nautical touch.
The armoire was a lucky yard sale find. Although, not-so-lucky was having to take the entire thing apart to get it upstairs and then put it all back together! Lucky again, though, that it fit perfectly into this space in our bedroom.
We don’t have a typical headboard for our bed. Instead, we use an old dresser behind the bed. The dresser isn’t really usable as a dresser anymore, but it makes a wonderful tabletop for adding pictures, lamps, and other little things. Which, when you think about it, is actually more functional than a traditional headboard.
I hung a strand of beautiful rosary beads around the lampshade. I love little unexpected details like this, they add so much character and make the room feel collected rather than decorated all at once.
And, of course, I always have to have seashells and a little beachy decor in every room. I can’t seem to help myself! They are some of my favorite things to collect, and I love the little coastal touches they add to our home.

What I love most about this little update is that I didn’t buy anything new. I simply took something I already had and used it in a new way, and somehow it made me fall in love with this space all over again.
It was such a simple idea, and maybe it’s something you could try in your own home, too. So keep an eye out for those old lace curtains and tablecloths at thrift stores and antique shops, you never know what you might find. I hope this gives you a little inspiration to look around at what you already have and see what you can create with it.
