I’ve been dreaming about adding blue and white tile to our fireplace for quite a while now. The soft coastal colors have always been one of my favorite decorating elements, but installing real tile wasn’t something I wanted to tackle. Then, while shopping for shelf liner at Fred Meyer, I happened to walk past this peel and stick wallpaper, and it was on sale!
I brought it home, and just a couple of hours later, our fireplace had an entirely new look. Sometimes the simplest projects make the biggest impact.

The Fireplace Before:

Why I Loved Working With This Wallpaper

I honestly couldn’t have been happier with how this wallpaper performed.
It is thick, high quality, and easy to install. I could peel it back several times to reposition pieces until everything lined up perfectly, and it never lost its stickiness.
Even better, it was surprisingly forgiving. A few areas required piecing smaller sections together, but once everything was in place you couldn’t tell where one piece ended and another began.
One roll covered the entire fireplace surround, and I still have some left over, which already has me looking around the house wondering where I can use the rest!

I didn’t just add the wallpaper to the front of the fireplace but I added it to the hearth as well.

The After:

At first, I was worried that this pattern might be too busy, but once I was finished and had the room put back together, I felt like the wallpaper pulled the whole room together nicely.

This Fireplace Has Worn More Than One Look
One of the things I love most about peel and stick wallpaper is that it isn’t permanent.
Several years ago I covered this same fireplace with a faux brick wallpaper, and I absolutely loved that look too. It completely changed the fireplace and gave it so much character.
That’s what makes wallpaper so much fun. Instead of committing to one style forever, you can easily update a room whenever inspiration strikes.
This time I was ready for something lighter, fresher, and a little more coastal.

When my fireplace had the brick wallpaper on it, the wood panels on the fireplace wall were turned over to the white-painted side. I like that these are real Barn wood planks (Pulled off of an old barn being town down) The boards have two sides to them, allowing me to flip them over whenever I want a different look, white, wood, or I have even painted the white side different colors before.

Styling the Mantel for a Softer Coastal Look
Once the wallpaper was finished, I couldn’t stop there.
The new fireplace called for a fresh mantel.
I removed the oversized horse artwork that had been hanging there and replaced it with a much smaller sailboat print. The lighter artwork allows the beautiful wallpaper to become the star of the fireplace instead of competing with it.
Then I shopped my house for accessories, adding a white pitcher filled with hydrangeas, a weathered wooden paddle, a glass hurricane candle, and one of my favorite blue and white crocks. Together they create a relaxed coastal cottage feel that perfectly complements the new tile pattern.
Sometimes simply rearranging things you already own is enough to make a room feel brand new.

My Favorite Part? The Blue Next to the Denim Couch
Out of everything, I think my favorite combination is seeing the wallpaper beside our denim sectional. The blues couldn’t complement each other more perfectly.

The wallpaper almost looks as though it was chosen specifically for this room, tying together so many of the blue and white accents I’ve collected over the years. It feels brighter, calmer, and much more like the beach cottage style I’ve been slowly moving towards again lately.

This Little Project Sparked New Ideas
It’s funny how one small decorating project can inspire an entirely new direction.
Adding this wallpaper has me looking at other rooms in our home with fresh eyes. I’m finding myself drawn more and more toward soft coastal cottage style, blue and white patterns, natural textures, weathered wood, and simple collected pieces.

I’m currently switching things up on the bookshelf you see here and I will share it with you when I’m done.
