The Wicker House Collections No. 4 – Quilts
I’ve always admired beautiful heirloom quilts. The kind that have been passed down through generations, stitched by hand, and treasured for decades. While I don’t have a collection of antique quilts in my own home, I have discovered that quilts don’t have to be heirlooms to make a home feel cozy. Over the years, I’ve collected, made, and decorated with quilts in all kinds of ways, and they’ve become one of my favorite ways to add warmth and personality to our home.
Displaying Quilts in our Home
I love finding simple ways to display quilts around our home, whether that’s hanging one from a quilt rack, draping one over a towel bar, or keeping a stack of quilts and cozy throws on an open shelf. Even when they’re simply tucked into a corner or layered into a room, quilts add so much warmth, color, and texture.
Decorating With Quilts in a Living Room
One of my favorite ways to use quilts is in the living room. I love draping a quilt over the back of a couch, covering a cushion with one, or simply tossing one over a chair. Adding a quilt instantly brings cottage charm, color, and texture to a room, and I love that they can actually be used and enjoyed rather than simply displayed. And when life gets messy, most quilts can simply be tossed in the wash, making them both pretty and practical.
I actually cut this quilt/comforter in half so that I could add it to both sections of my sectional couch.
Then I flipped that quilt around and revealed the back side of the quilt which gave a much lighter and softer look.
Adding quilts over the couch is just something I have always done in our home. I just like the coziness it adds.
Quilts in the Bedroom
Quilts can completely change the look and feel of a bedroom. I often use one as the main cover on our bed, but I also love folding a quilt and laying it across the foot of the bed for an extra layer of coziness. I once even wrapped our headboard in a quilt, which was such an easy way to add softness, color, and cottage charm to the room.
This next image is from 2011- I wrapped a quilt around our headboard. Still a great idea. Such an easy way to decorate with quilts and it soften the look of a bed.
Quilts Beyond the Bed
Quilts don’t have to stay indoors. I’ve used them as picnic blankets in the garden, and even hanging one on the clothesline to dry can become part of the scenery. There’s something about a quilt blowing in the breeze that instantly adds a little country charm and makes an ordinary backyard moment feel special.
Handmade Quilt Projects
I sewed two Quilted block throw Pillows
I see more quilted projects in my future because these pillows were so fun to sew. I actually keep moving these pillows around our home because I love to see them in every room. They just make me happy!

I painted a Barn Quilt for our Fireplace
Wanting something different on our fireplace for Christmas, I decided to paint a Barn quilt on some old wood and hang it up. I had originally planned to paint it white and blue, or white and Red, but then in the end I kept it white and wood. Although, I think it would still have been cute in any of the different ways.

I may not have a collection of antique heirloom quilts, but over the years I’ve discovered just how much I love having quilts around our home. Whether handmade, tied with yarn, layered on a bed, tossed over a chair, or spread out in the garden, they bring a sense of warmth and nostalgia that makes a house feel cozy and lived in. For me, that’s really what decorating with quilts is all about!
