This Idea is so simple that anyone can do it! I added Curtains to the two bookshelves in our dining room, but this concept can be done on any shelf unit, or kitchen cabinets, as most seen added to a cupboard under a sink. Read along to see more of my curtains and learn how easy they were to make.
I got this idea to add curtains to these bookshelves and once I get an idea planted in my head, there’s usually no stopping me from going through with my idea. The very next day, I was in Family Dollar picking up Spring Tension Rods. I took a picture of what I bought to show you better. I grabbed two of the white tension rods for $6.75 each. These tension rods are perfect for creating bookshelf curtains. Don’t have a Family Dollar near you? No problem, You can find them on Amazon HERE. Mine were 28-48 inches long and did not come with instructions, so it took me a minute to figure out how they work. You twist them to lengthen or shorten them and then you slide them down into place. I picked up white, but it really shouldn’t matter what color you get since they will be covered with fabric.
I already had this blue and white stripe fabric on hand and I already had it cut to be almost the perfect size for my bookshelves. One of the pieces of fabric I had was longer than the other, so I had to do a little bit of cutting and sewing to get the two pieces to be the same size, and then I just sewed about a two inch opening at the top for the rod to go through.
I played around with some other fabric I had on hand too. Because you don’t need that much fabric for this little curtain you could think about using cut in half pillowcases, shower curtain, I even was thinking about cutting a small tablecloth in half for my curtains. So look around your home, chances are you already have some fabric you like available to you.
Here is where I ran into a problem though. The above picture is where I had planned to put my curtains. I was going to remove the doors and replace them with the curtains. Easy enough, right? Well so I thought. After I had gotten one of the doors off, I started on the second one, and the screws were so stripped that they were not going to come off. Not just one screw, but these doors had 6 screws each and I couldn’t get any of them off.
So I came up with a Plan B and kept the doors on and just added the curtain rod to the bottom shelf. It doesn’t look as great in the end, and the curtains are higher off the ground then they would have been the initial way, but I still think they look cute. Plus if I took the doors off, I would have had to have found a place to store them. So in the end it worked out okay. It will be a little bit more work to get into the cupboards now, but that’s not a big deal.
I think they turned out pretty cute nonetheless. They really added a ton of Charm to these bookshelves. It’s such a simple detail but made a big impact.
I like how the bookshelves flow into the kitchen. I actually bought the wallpaper and fabric together, so I had planned for them to go together. I recently added this wall shelf to our kitchen wall and loved the look it added to an otherwise blank wall.
It was hard to capture it all in one picture but the fabric on the awning above the kitchen sink, and the fabric on the bar stools is the same fabric that I added to the bookshelves so it all ties together beautifully.
And if you are interested, the blue and white stripe Curtain on the big window in our kitchen is actually just a shower curtain that I cut in half. Can you tell I love blue and white stripes?
I’m currently in a Coastal Farmhouse Style mood and so I kept that in mind when decorating my shelves. I like to decorate with white, seashells and wicker for the Coastal side, and Galvanized Buckets, white pitchers, and baskets for the Farmhouse Side. To me, it all goes together perfectly.
After I styled my shelves and took all of these pictures, I then re-styled them and added an old wood window frame and a large wood box to the shelves. So it then looked like this:
On Instagram I took a Poll and asked my followers which one they liked best out of the two looks and the original look got the most votes. But I have yet to put it back to that way. So here is one last look at the bookshelves after I added the curtains and styled them.
