How to Make a Bed Canopy

I have always wanted a canopy bed and now I have one……ish 😊 I hung four white sheets in the corners of my bed and created the look of a canopy bed. It was so simple to create but the results made a huge difference to my bedroom.

I’ve tried different methods of a canopy before, but after seeing a gal on Instagram use a staple gun to attach curtains from her ceiling, it inspired me to do the same. I’m lucky to have slanted wood ceilings here in our bedroom but this can easily be done on a flat ceiling as well.

You can learn more about our Wood Ceilings HERE. We actually used our old fence wood to create this look.

Cut White Flat Sheets in Half – Size of Sheet depends on fullness you want.

I already had these white sheets cut in half for curtains that I was using elsewhere in our home. I love using white sheets for curtains. You Can see a popular blog post that I wrote ages ago all about using sheets as curtains HERE.

First you will need to cut two flat sheets in half longways. You can use either Twin Size, Queen size, or king size, all depending on how full you want the curtains to hang. Mine are more like a king size cut in half, but I would say to use whatever you have available to you. You can also sew a hem on the cut edges if you want. I did not and it is not noticeable.

Accordion fold the sheet at the top

Looking at the picture above you will see that I created little pleats in the sheet as I hung it up. Start by stapling in the end of the sheet and then accordion fold and staple every couple of inches until you reach the end. When I got to the end, I folded the end in so that it didn’t have that raw edge showing.

Staple sheet to ceiling in all four corners.

The Staple gun worked so great for this project. If you don’t already have a staple gun, you should think about getting one. LIKE THIS ONE. I will list a few options at the end of this post but honestly you can get them pretty inexpensively and I have used mine a bunch of times for various projects, like reupholstering bar stools as seen HERE.

These curtains didn’t take me long to hang and I just love how they turned out. It gave our bedroom a fun tropical vacation kinda feel.

I’m debating on adding more sheets to mine. I think a swoosh connecting the two sides up at the top could look pretty too. What do you think? I may also switch out the window curtains too and hang them higher to look like it’s part of the canopy as well. Lots of different options here.

I also just ordered some new bedding, so I’ll probably be back soon to give you another update but for now what do you think of the bed canopy? Are you wanting to give it a try.

Where oh where did you find that lovely little bolster pillow with the geographic coordinates?? Are they custom to your location? I love the Greenwich Observatory and stand over the Prime Meridian, so this pillow cover is particularly intriguing to me. Thanks! Love your posts.

Hi Sylvia! I got that Coordinates pillow from IKEA Many Years ago. However, I know that there are sellers on Etsy that will custom make pillows with whatever coordinates you want. You can see examples Here: https://rstyle.me/+40b-exwnVtX-5LU1wswP4g
