How I added Bamboo to my Fireplace

I was wanting to make a change to our fireplace, and after some thought, as well as a few idea pivots, I came up with this idea to add bamboo to our fireplace.

Below is a picture of how the fireplace looked before. I added the barn wood planks years ago and although I still really liked this look of the planks, I was just wanting a change for the new year.

So the first thing I did was remove the barn wood planks. I’ve removed the planks back in 2020 as you can see from my pretty graffiti art 🤣 At that time I had turned the boards back around. I had the planks on the wood side facing out before that. This fireplace has see several looks over the years. White planks, wood planks, and then the surrounding has been painted light blue, green, grey, and white. You know me, I love to make lots of changes around our home!

So many changes in fact, that all of the layers and layers of paint on this became too much and it was all starting to peel away. After I took off the planks, I had to do some scraping and sanding to get it ready to be painted again with some fresh new paint.

To come up with this gorgeous green color, I had to play around with some paint samples that I already had on hand. This color is a mixture of both a color called, Gingko Tree, and a color called, Mountain Sage, both colors by EasyCare found at True Value. They were color samples that I had left over from when I painted our garage.

Next up, I picked up some bamboo also from True Value. Bamboo sticks like this can be found at most any home and garden store, Just look in the garden section. I ended up using three of these bundles, 12 sticks each. The cost was around nine dollars a bundle.

This bamboo idea was a happy accident. This vision of mine started out with me wanting to add lattice to my mantel, but after not finding what I was looking for, I grabbed the bamboo. I first made a grid of the mantel size on my floor with painters tape and then I laid the bamboo out in a cross pattern. But in the end I thought it would look wonky because the bamboo isn’t perfectly straight. And so I decided to just add the bamboo vertically instead.

I just used my garden shears to cut the bamboo to size, and then I used dabs of hot glue here and there to keep it in place.

I then hung my bamboo mirror back up and added a palm leaf and a pineapple to the sides.

I had originally thought that I might want to re-paint this mirror, but once I got it hung up, I really liked the contrast of the dark wood next to the green.

I’m really pleased with how this all came together. I think the combination of the green color and the bamboo look both earthy and refreshing.

I think that the colors in the room play nicely together. The new green color complements the maroon couch, cream walls, and blue ceiling. Although, to be completely honest, I might be itching to paint the walls and ceiling now. We’ll see.

Overall I love how the new fireplace looks. My family says it reminds them of a Bali Themed hotel that we once stayed at, so that makes me happy. The bamboo definitely adds a tropical – zen feeling to our living room and now I want to add more of this feeling to the rest of our home.
