I have made a few changes in our dining room since the last time I shared it and so today I wanted to share with you those changes which involve a new chair color, picture ledges, and an overall Hamptons Decorating Style. Thanks for being here today, I hope you enjoy today’s blog post.
I’ve actually never been to the Hamptons before, but I feel like I understand the look quite well. I’ve been told a few times that my home looks like it belongs in the Hamptons and this always makes me smile. As I type this blog post, I’ll explain why I’m calling this look “Hamptons Style”. I know recently the term, “Nancy Meyers Style” has also become very popular. This style can sometimes be quite similar to Hamptons Style, but it’s not always as Coastal, so I feel like I should just stick to the term, Hamptons here in our Dining Room.
Lots of White
Hamptons Decorating Style involves a lot of white. White walls and white furnishings are key. My walls are actually a Vanilla color, but they come across as soft and light so they still fit the look. I then incorporated a lot of white frames, dishes, and decor in the room.
A Mix of Blue and White
The colors Blue and White together are a staple in Hamptons style. I tossed a blue and white printed piece of fabric over my table and mixed in some blue and white decor.
Hydrangeas
Hydrangeas are the most popular flower in the Hamptons and so they need to be on displayed everywhere possible. Since I can’t grow hydrangeas for the life of me here in Idaho, I opted for faux hydrangeas that could easily pass as the real deal.
Let’s stop here for a minute so I can share with you my dining chairs that I painted…. Yes, Again!! I have painted these chairs 4 times now. The chairs were wood to begin with and then I painted them black, then green, then blue, and now they are brown. You can see all of the different looks of these chairs in this BLOG POST. The blue was cute, but I wanted a change.
So I picked up 5 cans of this Rust-Oleum Spray paint in a color named, Kona Brown. This color is my new favorite. I have found a few other things to paint with this spray paint since the chairs. I think I will just keep an extra can of this spray paint on hand from here on out. It’s such a pretty brown.
I think the dining room chairs turned out really pretty and go so well with the floors and all of the other dark brown I have throughout our home.
Now, to go along with this Hamptons style, I perhaps should have painted the chairs white. But brown just felt like the better choice for now. I like how they ground the room a bit.
I’m actually kinda surprised that I haven’t painted these chairs white before, since like I said, this is the fourth time I’ve painted them and white is typically a color I gravitate to. So perhaps, one day they will be painted white, but I don’t know, I do love this brown.
Natural Wicker and Woods
Wicker most definitely is a Hamptons style element, along with natural woods. I do have two wicker chairs in the room, again, they would be more “on Hamptons Style” if they were white or a light wicker color, but I quite prefer them dark brown for now.
Okay, now let’s pause one more time so I can talk about the second change in the room; the picture ledge shelves. I actually made these ledges years ago and blogged all about them along with my easy Step by Step Tutorial HERE. I’ve had the ledges hanging in our living room before, but never in our dining room, which is a great place to hang them. Not only can you add picture frames to them, but plates, platters, and other dishes as well.
I filled the ledges up with picture frames and then hung a few other frames around the ledges. It makes such a statement to the room and will be easy to switch things around on if I decide to later down the road.
Coastal Art
Speaking of pictures, I stuck to a lot of black and white and coastal photographs, both of which can be found in Hamptons style homes.
Architectural Molding
Wainscoting, tongue and groove paneling, bead board, detailed millwork, molding and trim, can all be found in Hamptons home. Lucky for me, we bought our home with lots of molding already added to it. I especially love these two corner hutches in our dining room, they are a perfect place to display blue and white dishes. Another Option to add character could be to hang Bead board Wallpaper. on your walls. I haven’t tried it yet, but have always wanted to.
Soft Blues
Our ceilings are painted blue, this can be found in Hamptons homes, but it’s more recognized in the southern states. However, touches of soft blues are always considered a Hamptons Decorating Element. Learn about my Paint Colors HERE.
Blue and White Stripes.
I love stripes! And blue and white stripes are my favorite. I made sure to incorporate lots of blue and white stripes in the room. A beach bag, and a throw pillow are shown here…..
While some blue and white striped napkins, and a white pitcher with blue stripes can be found on my table setting.
Light and Airy feeling.
I switched out my curtains to these older ones from Ikea. These curtains feel more light and airy than the ones I had hanging before. And then you can see here my collection of wicker picnic baskets. They’re stacking up pretty hight these days. 😆
