When I started rearranging our bookshelves for fall, my son looked at them and said they looked like we lived in an apple orchard out in the country. I couldn’t help but think he was right. With wicker pumpkins, old books, horse decor, cowboy finds, and a few of my favorite collected pieces, the shelves have taken on a cozy country feeling that feels just right for the beginning of fall.
I hadn’t planned on redecorating these shelves. I simply started moving a few things around after bringing out the wicker pumpkins, and before long the shelves had a whole new look to them.
The wicker pumpkins were really what started this little refresh. I love how they mix with the baskets, hats, wood, and other natural textures already on these shelves.
These little wicker pumpkins came from my mom. She recently decided to declutter and sent me a huge box filled with holiday decorations she no longer wanted. She told me these pumpkins reminded her of me, so she wanted me to have them. I love my mom, and that little comment made receiving them even more special.
I have always loved mixing a little horse and equestrian decor into our home, and these shelves are the perfect place to display some of it. They’re also a little tribute to my husband’s grandfather, who was both an artist and a cowboy. He actually made the horse statue you see here, and the cowboy painting is a painting of him
Here’s the fun story behind the cowboy painting: the artist who painted it was a friend of my husband’s grandpa and originally created the painting to be used in a cigarette advertisement. My husband’s grandpa was pictured holding a cigarette in one hand and a pack of Marlboros in the other. He didn’t want an image of himself smoking, so the artist changed the cigarette into a rope. I think that makes the painting even more special, and definitely gives it a story worth telling.
The more I look at these shelves, the more I realize that almost everything here has a story. The wicker hats belonged to my grandma and grandpa. The cowboy books were my husband’s when he was little. The wicker wine carrier was a wedding gift from 24 years ago, and even the wine corks have special dates written on them. These aren’t things I bought to fill a shelf, they’re things we’ve collected, inherited, been given, and held onto over the years.
I think that’s what I love most about decorating our home. The things that mean the most aren’t necessarily the newest or the most expensive, they’re the things that remind us of someone, somewhere, or some moment in our lives.
