I Dyed Our Red Sectional Couch Slipcovers Maroon using RIT Dye.

Yes I Did! And I am So Happy That I Did!

Okay, So here was our Red Sectional Couch Before:

And Here is the dye I used:

This Project took 4 separate Loads / 4 Nights / 4 Bottles of Dark Brown RIT dye, 4 Bottles of Black RIT Dye and 4 Cups of Salt. I divided my covers into 4 loads and just followed the instructions on the bottle. For each load I first ran a rinse cycle on the covers in the washing machine , then I removed the covers and got my dye bath going. While the washer machine was filling up with HOT water I added One bottle of dark brown RIT Dye.

Then I added one bottle of Black RIT Dye.

Followed with One Cup of Salt. I’m not exactly sure how the salt helps, but it’s in the instructions on the bottle so I added it to each load.

Then I added my wet covers to the wash.

I let the washer mix for a bit and then I pulled the knob to stop the wash. I let my covers sit in the Dye bath over night. In the morning I started the wash again to let the cycle finish. And Lastly, I ran a wash cycle with laundry detergent and cold water to give them a clean finish.

I only dried the cushion covers in the dryer, but I put the actual large covers on the couch while they were still wet. These big pieces are so hard to put on, and I find that it’s easier to put them on if they are wet.

It took me 4 days/nights to finish dying my large sectional sofa but it was worth it. I was happy with how it turned out.

In all honestly, I was going for a dark brown color. I figured that the dark brown and black dye would give my covers a dark chocolate brown result, so I was surprised when my covers came out maroon. Too much of the original red came through. The bottle suggested that If you have color fabric you should first use a product of theirs to remove the color first called Dye Remover, but I really didn’t want to bother with that.

Even though I hadn’t planned on the maroon color I was actually really happy with the results. I think overall the color is dark, deep, rich, and flows well with the rest of our home.

The reason why I wanted to dye our red couch in the first place was because I often found the red to be a hard color to decorate around……. well except for at Christmas time. I will probably miss the red when Christmas season rolls around again, but for the rest of the year, I should be able to decorate around this color so much easier.

I already love how this color looks with all of my blue decor, like these blue velvet pillows. I added roses to the coffee table and it immediately gave me Romantic Artisanal Vintage Vibes.

Across the room is still my white Ikea Erktorp sofa. The two couches work well with each other. I added white pillows to the maroon couch and maroon pillows to the white couch.

It was a bit of a dark day when I took these pictures, usually this room is a lot lighter, but I was just too excited to share the new couch color with you so this is what you get.

And I guess I should also mention that this couch is 20+ years old. My husband and I picked it out from Arhaus when we were first married. Arhaus doesn’t even carry this couch anymore. But it’s the best, most comfortable couch ever and I don’t ever want to part with it…… well in less we ever move. Then we will be for sure saying goodbye, this couch has been through a lot over the years and it is showing, but for now it’s staying right here. And so to experience with some dye on it felt like an easy choice. No harm done if it really didn’t work out. But also sooo happy it did!

So what do you think? Would you attempt this on your couch?

does the base have a cover that comes off too? thats the only issue with my sofa. It has a base cover that doesn’t come off so I have been putting off trying to dye my sofa not knowing for sure what I will do for the base section.

Yes, My base couch cover is removable. Not sure I’d attempt to dye it if it isn’t removable. Fabric Paint might be an option for you.
