Gel Stained Potting Station / A baby Changing Table Makeover

Coming at you today with yet another Minwax Gel Stain project. If you’ve been following along for a while now then you already know how much I love to use Gel Stain and I continue to find new ways and places to use it. Today, I’m sharing how I used Gel Stain to makeover an old baby changing table. You can check out more Gel Stain Projects of mine HERE.

This little red baby diaper changing table has been around our home for a long time. Considering my boys are in High school now and my oldest is just about to graduate. Even though this piece was initially intended for babies, it has since been a great little shelf for holding storage in our basement. But once I rediscovered it, I decided that it would be great as a potting station in our backyard to hold all of my extra pots, tools, and other garden items.

I also knew right away that I wanted to gel stain it brown to make it look like wood again. So I picked up some spray paint and gel stain and got to work. Pictured below is the Spray Paint I used. It’s named NETMEG by Rustoleum. And then the Gel Stain I used was the one pictured below on the left named, AGED OAK by Minwax. (I’ll link products at the end of this post).

The first thing I did was hose down and clean the changing table. Laid some old cardboard under it and used the entire can of spray paint to cover it. ….. Well mostly cover it, I ran out of spray paint. I should have bought a second can, or at least went over it all with the sample of paint pictured above (named Cardboard by SW) But instead I figured it was covered “good enough” since it was just going to be used outside and be covered up with all of my pots.

I honestly thought that all of the red still showing would cover up well with the gel stain over it, but as you can see, it still showed through a bit. Perfectly fine because again this is being used outside, however, if I was using it indoors, perhaps for a bar cart or a shelf then I would probably wish for it to be covered better.

Wearing rubber gloves and with a cheap paint brush I just brushed the gel stain on. I also had a roll of paper towels on hand and wiped it down a little here and there as I went along. On all of my past gel stain projects, I never really wipe the gel stain off, I just paint it on, brush over an area a couple of times and leave it. I also usually go over my projects with several coats of gel stain, allowing it to dry in between coats, but here, I decided to go lighter and only use one coat of gel stain. The advantage of adding more coats is that my projects look less blotchy in the end, but for this piece I wanted to go simple with just one coat.

I left it to dry for 24 hours and then I filled the table up with all of my flower pots. This was just what I was needing, a place to store all of my garden supplies to make planting more easy.

This area in our backyard is covered so I don’t have to worry about it getting rained on.

Also, check out our roof and all of the moss growing on it. Isn’t that fun? I don’t think I have ever seen this much moss growing here before but I love it. Makes our home look more like a little cottage in the woods.

So what do you think? If you have an old changing table that could use a makeover then I suggest you give this little DIY a try or PIN IT for later.
