I have not been this excited to share a new blog post in quite some time, but I am over the moon with these new curtains in our sunroom that I just couldn’t wait to share them with you. And by Sunroom, I’m actually referring to my Son’s Room, who is now claiming our sunroom as his bedroom. I’m just so used to calling this room our sunroom that I can’t seem to stop calling it that.
I have recently given this room a makeover by painting the walls green and then I painted all of the windows and trim in a brown paint with a top coat of stain to give them a wood look, more on that to come, but I have to say, the finishing touch to the room are definitely these beautiful new curtains that I made.

The fabric I picked out from Fabric Wholesale Direct is called the Robert Tartan Plaid in a Cotton Flannel. This fabric is so warm and soft and fluffy. It’s thick but more lightweight compared to a flannel bed sheet, making it perfect for any season. This fabric is so nice and soft that I think it would also be great for sewing pajamas, boxers, pillowcases, blankets, and clothing such as a long skirt. Plus I am always drawn to blues and greens and so this fabric immediately drew me in with its vibrant color palette.

Look at how wide this fabric is! It’s 57-58 Inches wide, which makes this fabric so ideal for sewing curtains. I cut the fabric in half lengthwise for my curtains because our windows are smaller, but this width would be wonderful as-is for a larger window.
I ordered 13 yards of fabric, which is a lot! But I ended up using every last inch of it for my curtains. I had to lay the fabric down in our hallway in order to cut it to size. I first cut the fabric into five 90 inch long pieces.
And then I cut those five pieces in half lengthwise giving me a total of 10 panels. This fabric is wonderful for measuring and cutting because of the plaid pattern, the lines are already marked for you 🙂
I needed to hem all of the raw edges so I first used my Iron to make the creases before I sewed them down. I just hemmed 3/4 of an inch on the sides and bottom.
As for the Top of the fabric, I went with 2 inches. This gave me just enough room to fit my rod through. I didn’t want my top fold to be too much wider because I was worried that it may look like I was using a bed sheet and I didn’t want that.
So just like the sides, I first used an iron to make my creases which gave me a nice finish when I sewed it down. This Flannel was so nice to work with, it iron easily and was a dream to sew with.
*Note: you need to hem the sides of the curtain first before you sew the top flap. Otherwise you will sew your flap closed and not be able to insert the curtain rod.
After my curtain panels were all sewn, I had a small amount of fabric leftover so I decided to use it to make curtain tie backs. I made four of these strips and sewed them to the outside edge of every other panel.
Here is how the tie backs turned out. I can now use the sewn on strap to tie two panels together, which will be nice to give the curtains a more open look when wanted.

The Plaid fabric goes so nicely with the rest of the room. I’ll share more of this room another day. Today, I just wanted to focus on the new curtains. I’m really pleased with how lovely the curtains hang and how they just so perfectly kiss the floor.
This fabric is great for curtains because it is dark and gives privacy, but as you can see, it still filters in a nice amount of light. My son originally requested blackout curtains, but I wasn’t loving that idea, I think blackout curtains would have made the room way too dark. These are a much better option.
This is my favorite room of our home because of all of the old windows in here. Which is why I also keep referring to this room as the Sunroom and not my son’s bedroom.
The windows were all painted white before and really stood out in the room. I was hesitant about painting them brown because the brown made them less noticeable then how they looked white. But now, I’m really happy that I painted them brown. It feels a lot more warm and cozy.
Not only are there a lot of windows in this room, but there are also french doors leading into the room. For privacy reasons the french doors also needed curtains.
Because this room is off of the living room, I just love how the curtains look from the living room side. I honestly want to get more of this fabric and sew curtains for our living and dining rooms as well.
I’m taking all the credit here, but my son picked out the wall color, trim color, bedding, and helped me decide on the fabric for these curtains. So this really is his design. Which now I’m thinking maybe I should just let him design the rest of our home.
Oh, I guess one more thing that I wanted to share is that I also painted the Curtain rods. They were silver before, and after I hung up the curtains, I didn’t like how the curtain rods looked. They really stood out and looked shiny.
So I took it all down and spray painted the curtain rods in a color called Kona Brown by Rustoleum, (which is my new favorite spray paint color.) And then I hung it all back up.
Look at how the curtain rods just disappear into the background now. I am so happy I took the time to paint them. It really made a huge difference.
You can barely see the curtain rods now, Magic! Looks so much more sophisticated, don’t you agree?
I also spent a good part of my weekend cleaning these windows. If you have ever painted window panes then you already know what a Pain this is 😂 I had to use a razor blade to scrape off all the extra paint and get the four layers of glass looking clear again. Gotta love old windows.
