Sometimes the best decorating ideas start with something small. In this case, it was a set of wooden curtain rings I found at the thrift store. I loved them right away, but at first I wasn’t exactly sure where I would use them in our home. After bringing them home and thinking about it for a while, I realized they would be perfect in our main bathroom. What started as a simple thrift store find quickly turned into a small bathroom makeover that completely changed the look of the space.

The Thrift Store Find that Started it All
On my last visit to the thrift store, I came across these beautiful wooden curtain rings. I ended up getting the whole set for around four dollars, which felt like such a steal. I didn’t actually have a plan for them at the time, but I thought they were too pretty to pass up. Sometimes when you find something special like that, you just know it needs to come home with you.

The Shower Before:
I actually still like the blue shower curtain that was hanging here. It’s a Gap brand curtain that I bought at Walmart years ago, and it has served us well. I was really just ready for a change. The part I never liked was the curtain rod. It was just a plain white pole that always looked a little boring to me, and I knew it could be better. The shower clips were also kind of fun, they were little silver stars, but once I brought home the wooden curtain rings, I knew they would look so much better in this space.

Spray Painting the Curtain Rod
I always keep a can of this spray paint on hand. The color is Kona Brown by Rust-Oleum, and it’s one of my favorite shades of brown. It has a rich tone with just a hint of red, which makes it feel warm and classic. I’ve used this color on several projects around our home over the years, including our dining room chairs, [as seen here] and it always turns out beautifully.

I brought the curtain rod outside to spray paint it and leaned it up against a log with a piece of cardboard underneath to protect the ground. I sprayed the paint down the length of the pole and then gently rotated it so I could cover all sides evenly. It only took one coat with a few small touch-ups. I let it dry for a couple of hours between coats before bringing it back inside.

A Perfect Match
Once the paint was dry, I brought the curtain rod back inside and hung it up along with the wooden rings. I was so pleased with how well they matched together. The rich brown color of the rod paired perfectly with the warm wood tones of the rings, and it instantly looked so much better than the old white rod.

I did consider hanging the curtain rod a little higher, closer to the ceiling, because I always think that look can make a space feel taller and more finished. But in this bathroom, the rod actually fits better placed right above the shower walls. It feels much more secure that way, and I don’t have to worry about it slipping or falling down.

Using a Bed Sheet as a Shower Curtain
Once the brown rod and wooden curtain rings were in place, I wanted something a little different from the shower curtain I had hanging before. After looking around the house, I came across this old tropical bed sheet. It’s a Roxy brand sheet that I bought years ago from Pottery Barn Teen. The funny thing is, I never really use flat sheets on my bed — just the fitted ones (I know, I’m weird that way!) — so this one is practically brand new. I clipped it onto the rings and I think it looks beautiful hanging here as a shower curtain.

I also added a plastic shower liner on the inside to keep everything water resistant. The sheet is larger than the liner, so I simply centered the liner in the middle and let the sheet hang a little longer on both ends. It actually worked out nicely and still gives the shower a full, finished look.

How the Colors Came Together
Once the tropical sheet was hung, I took a step back to really look at how everything came together, and I couldn’t have been happier with the result. The colors in the sheet work beautifully with the light tan walls and the brown trim in the bathroom. The blue in the curtain also picks up the blue tones in the tile on both the floor and the countertop. Altogether, the color scheme feels warm, relaxed, and really pleasant.

A Simple Bathroom Update that Made a Big Difference
I love how this whole makeover came together, all because of a set of wooden curtain rings I found at the thrift store. At the time, I didn’t know where I would use them, but once I decided on the bathroom, everything else followed naturally. Spray painting the curtain rod led to updating the shower curtain, and a few simple changes completely transformed the space. It’s amazing how small updates can make such a big difference!

I’m so happy with how this simple bathroom update turned out. The thrifted curtain rings, freshly painted rod, and tropical sheet may have been small changes, but they completely refreshed the space. Sometimes the simplest projects make the biggest impact, and this bathroom now feels cozy, stylish, and just like me.
