How I decorated my Living Room in Equestrian Style

As soon as the Christmas decorations came down, I felt the urge to shift our living room into something a little richer and more grounded. I started by hanging a horse print on the fireplace, then slowly layered in warm browns, classic equestrian details, and cozy textures. What began as a simple seasonal refresh quickly turned into a living room inspired by equestrian style, timeless, inviting, and full of character.

Setting the Tone with Equestrian Art

Once the Christmas decor came down, the first thing I changed in our living room was the artwork. Hanging a black and white horse print immediately set the tone and gave the space that classic equestrian feel. It feels timeless, a little moody, and was the perfect starting point for the rest of the room.

Layering Warm Browns for a Cozy, Collected Feel

From there, I leaned into warm browns throughout the space. Our maroon couch grounds the room and adds richness without feeling heavy. These deeper tones are what give equestrian style its cozy, lived-in feeling, and they make the living room feel especially inviting.

Equestrian Details That Make the Space Feel Personal

The smaller details are where this room really comes to life. Old books stacked on the bookshelf, horse bookends, and a pewter trophy all nod to classic equestrian style without feeling themed. These are the kinds of pieces that feel collected over time and make the space feel personal and layered.

Cozy Textures Inspired by Equestrian Style

To soften the room, I added cozy textures wherever I could. A brown plaid flannel sleeping bag layered over the couch works as an unexpected topper and adds instant warmth. Paired with a denim rug underfoot, the mix of textures feels casual, comfortable, and perfect for everyday living.

Vintage Touches That Add Character

One of my favorite pieces in the room is an antique dark wood coat tree. It adds height, character, and that slightly old-world charm that fits beautifully with equestrian decor. Vintage pieces like this help balance newer items and give the room a sense of history.

Soft Lighting to Warm Up the Room

Lighting makes such a difference in how a space feels, especially in the evenings. I hung simple rope lights to add a soft glow that warms up the entire room. The lighting feels relaxed and cozy, and it really highlights the rich tones and textures throughout the space.

One of my favorite details in the room is the rope lighting. The lights hang from vintage, rusty metal brackets that were actually part of an old boiler a neighbor gave to me, which makes them feel extra special. Paired with simple linen shades, the lighting adds a soft, warm glow and the perfect mix of rustic character and classic equestrian style.

Why Equestrian Style Works So Well in a Living Room

Equestrian style works so well in a living room because it strikes the perfect balance between classic and comfortable. With warm colors, layered textures, and meaningful details, the space feels timeless yet livable. It’s a style that invites you to sit down, relax, and stay awhile.
