I have always loved the look of wicker baskets hanging up in a kitchen. There is just something so charming about hanging baskets in a kitchen, the looks is so country cottage, and so I decided to give this idea a try in our kitchen and here is how it turned out.
All I did was go out to our garage and found a wood stick long enough to fit across the tops of our cabinets. I was just going to test out this idea and so I grab the first thing I could find. This stick is just a piece of molding. I may replace it later with a stronger wood dowel or a rod of some sorts, but this works for now.
Next, I gathered up all of my wicker baskets and straw bags. I was surprised that I didn’t have more. Apparently I’ve been donating baskets over the years because I didn’t have any uses for them, but now that I do, I want to go thrifting for some more baskets. Ha!
I like how it turned out. I wasn’t sure at first so I kept asking my family if they thought it was cute or weird and they all reassured me that it looked good 🙂
Our kitchen already has a country look to it with the red cabinets and so I think that the baskets fit right in. If you want to learn more about my red Kitchen Cabinets, see this post.
I go back and forth if I want to re-paint our kitchen cabinets again or not, but I think I’ll keep them red for a while longer. The couch in our living room is red and I feel like the red cabinets in the kitchen give our home a cohesive look, which is the whole reason why I painted the cabinets red in the first place.
Red is a bold color, so I try keep the rest of our home pretty neutral as you can see from the other side of our kitchen.
Anyway, back to the baskets, to hang them I just slid the wood trim through the basket handles, which honestly, makes them un-useful and “for decorative purposes only” blah! I’d have to basically take the whole thing apart if ever I wanted to get to one of the baskets. So I may try to find some S shape hooks to hang them up with. Which I did already have one that I used to hang my tin pitcher. I also hung up some rosemary that I clipped from our yard. I attached the rosemary with some twine. I love that this can also be used to hang herbs up to dry.
Other options for things to hang could be string lights, copper pots, ladles, garlic, dried flowers, hanging plants. etc. etc. Can you think of anything else? Again, I’ll need to find a sturdier rod before I add too much more to mine but I like the idea of adding more to it.
I just think this idea is so simple that anyone could probably find a way to create it in their own kitchen. What about you, is this something that could look cute in your own kitchen? If so, give it a try.
So what do you think of this idea to hang wicker baskets in a kitchen?
Here are some baskets that I thought would work great for hanging up in a kitchen.
