DIY Zebra Pillow Using a Sharpie Marker

I’m kinda obsessed with animal prints at the moment and wanted to incorporate some into our living room. Ideally I was wanting THIS ZEBRA RUG, but thought I should try out just a little bit of zebra print first before I commit to a whole rug. And that’s how this idea to create a zebra print pillow using a sharpie marker came to mind. Follow along to see how I did it.

I shared this area of our living room in a blog post the other day. (Catch up HERE.) I’m slowing incorporating more and more of a tropical feel into this room. I love British Colonial Style where theres a mix of Tropical and Safari and so that’s more of the look that I’m going for in here.

I already had this cute white pom pom pillow and knew it would be perfect for this project, but any white pillowcase should work just fine if you want to give this a try.

The first thing I did was remove the pillow insert and added a piece of cardboard into the pillow cover. For my cardboard I just cut up a pizza box 🙂 I cut it to fit perfectly inside my cover. The cardboard blocks the marker from seeping through to the other side.

Then I laid the fabric straight and smoothed out any wrinkles.

I then went online and searched “zebra” I found a picture of a zebra print and found it helpful to use as a guide. I then began drawing lines onto the pillow with a Sharpie Marker. I made my lines smaller in areas and thicker in others. I noticed that my reference picture had a spine marking in the center and so I tried to copy that as well.

I used a mix of markers, but I found that the Chisel Edge black Sharpie marker worked the best for creating the lines. After I had my black lines put in, I outlined them in a dark brown sharpie marker. The brown maker cleaned up my lines and added just a little bit more detail. Here is how it turned out:

It’s not perfect, but it does look like a zebra print and that is exactly what I was going for. I’m happy with how it turned out.
