Living Room color scheme inspired by Ralph Lauren

I was really struggling to get the colors in our living room to feel cohesive—until I stumbled across a photo of a Ralph Lauren restaurant that completely changed my perspective. It inspired me to dig into my pillow stash and pull together a palette that felt both harmonious and playful, with a mix of patterns that finally clicked. Let me show you how it all came together—and if you’ve ever found yourself stuck when it comes to mixing colors, I hope this sparks a little inspiration for you too.

As you can see, I have a maroon couch (which I actually dyed myself using RIT dye). At first, I tried bringing in a spring-inspired palette with yellows and greens, but no matter how I styled it, it just didn’t feel quite right. It wasn’t until I added this mix of blue, white, and red/maroon pillows that the space finally started to come together.

Then I came across this photo on Pinterest—and instantly knew it was the perfect color scheme to borrow. It was taken a few years ago at a Ralph Lauren restaurant in Milan, styled specially for an event, and I’ve actually pinned several images of it over time because, truthfully, I’m a little obsessed. Seeing it again sparked something, so I headed straight to my stash of pillows, blankets, and fabrics and started pulling anything that felt like it could belong in that scene.

I layered the blankets and throw pillows across both the maroon sectional and the white couch, playing with patterns as I went. In the end, it felt like I had captured the essence of that inspiration photo—cozy, collected, and effortlessly stylish.

Even the green of our mantel echoed the greenery in the inspiration photo. Of course, the original image was taken outdoors in a dining setting, so there wasn’t much to draw from in terms of layout—but it gave me exactly what I needed: a fresh perspective on color and pattern, which was where I’d been feeling stuck.

If you ever find yourself stuck while decorating, I highly recommend starting with an inspiration photo. It doesn’t have to be an interior shot—sometimes outdoor spaces can offer the best ideas, especially when it comes to color schemes. A single image can spark a whole new direction for your space.

When it comes to couches, don’t be afraid to have fun with layers. I love draping mine with cozy blankets—and as for throw pillows, is there really such a thing as too many? I say no… even if my husband might disagree. 😂

I also decided to switch up the curtains. I had maroon ones hanging before, which added a warm, rosy glow to the room, but I recently brought back these blue tropical ones—and I was surprised by the difference they made. They let in so much more light and instantly made the space feel brighter, airier, and more refreshed.

I really do love the yellow and green color trend for spring, but I just couldn’t get it to work in our space. So I’m glad I finally landed on a color scheme that feels right for our home. Do you ever feel like certain colors just belong in your space, while others never quite click? I think I’m starting to figure out which ones our home loves most.

Looking across the room into our dining area, I recently gave this shelf a little refresh with some blue dishes. I’ll be sharing more details about this look in my next blog post—so stay tuned!
